Coordinating a Move with TDY or Deployment on the Calendar

Military life doesn’t always follow a perfect timeline—and when a PCS move overlaps with a Temporary Duty Assignment (TDY) or an upcoming deployment, stress levels can rise quickly. Trying to juggle packing, house-hunting, transportation, and timelines while one spouse is away (or preparing to leave) can feel like a logistical nightmare.

But you’re not alone—and with some advance planning, a solid communication strategy, and support from a MIL-Estate Support Network agent, your PCS move can still be smooth and successful.

1. Plan Ahead—Together

If you have advance notice of a TDY or deployment near your PCS window, start the conversation early. Outline each person’s responsibilities and set up key deadlines, like finalizing housing, shipping HHG, or arranging pet care.

2. Use Power of Attorney

Make sure the spouse who’s staying back has a Special Power of Attorney (SPOA) to handle housing contracts, closing on a home, enrolling children in school, and managing household goods. Your MRES agent can coordinate with JAG to ensure you have the documents needed.

3. Consider Remote House-Hunting Support

If your spouse is away during the house-hunting process, your MRES agent can provide virtual tours, coordinate inspections, and even represent you at closing. Many military buyers purchase sight-unseen with help from a trusted agent.

4. Keep Digital Access Organized

Set up a shared Google Drive or Dropbox with all move-related documents—orders, housing paperwork, POA copies, pet info, and travel itineraries. This ensures both spouses can stay informed and step in when needed.

5. Lean on Your Support Network

Whether it’s your FRG, Key Spouse, military neighbors, or an experienced MRES agent—don’t do this alone. Many agents in our network are Veterans or military spouses who’ve been through the same thing.
